Navy SEAL Toughing it out

I’m loving my time in London and what a magical place to be living! There is a special vibe here that makes me feel like anything is possible!

There are lots of people in the information marketing world that will tell you that it is easy to make it as an entrepreneur. It is not! Part of the strategies I have used to make sales is to appeal to your laziness and greed. That is typically what appeals to people starting out and are wantrepreneurs or solopreneurs, and it works. However I´m frustrated by the low success rates of my students and I want more people to succeed. That is why I have started to develop the Hardcore MBA system to help more people follow through and become part of the 6% that make it in business and own a lifestyle company.

I will be revealing more about my program in the next couple of weeks, but for now please check out the YouTube video below to start getting into the mindset of what it takes to thrive.

Hardcore Training for Entrepreneurs with Navy SEALs BUD/S Class 234
Seal_1

This video is the first part of a six part series on Class 234 of the BUD/S training. What I really enjoyed was how they think and what they have to go through to make it. One core mindset that the winners apply is; “I´m just going to get through this repetition”. Brandon Webb said to me that if you think about having months ahead of similar pain, you are much more likely to quit. So only think about getting through the next repetition or action. Interesting enough that was what the founder of UGG´s also told me. He said; “If I knew how hard it was going to be I may have never started.”

How does this short term thinking fit with the understanding of compound interest and long term goals? I go to the gym minimum 3 times a week. Is it always easy to go? NO! But, long term I need and want to stay physically and mentally fit and that’s why I go to the gym weekly. However when the lazy part of me starts saying; Let´s do it later/Let´s do it tomorrow, I simply say to myself. Let´s just do it today. If you want to read more about understanding why simple principles and habits work check out The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson.

So YES! Think long term, but when it comes to following through only focus on one exercise or activity at a time. I have now started including this habit in my journalism. When I mark an H it indicated that I did something I should do, but did not want to do. Typically there is fear or pressure related to that activity. If you do ONE Hard thing a day your life will transform!

Odds of Qualifying for SEAL training
Source

  • The Navy recruits approximately 40,000 people each year
  • Only about 6 percent of SEAL applicants meet the requirements.
  • About 1,000 recruits make it to SEAL training
  • About 250 complete their training
  • Roughly 80% who make it to BUD/S don’t finish
  • Navy Seals has the highest dropout rate of 96% last year

After interviewing legends of the Navy SEAL community they have all said that it´s not the fittest that survive, but the mentally fittest. Often the most badass looking guys are eliminated early in the training.

Entrepreneurs Journey

JourneyI have made it past the wilderness with 2 companies and they are now in the Lifestyle business category. Essential in the wilderness crossing was using the power of team.
Having people work in the roles of Marketing & Sales, Admin & Operations + Production is what worked for me and millions of other entrepreneurs.

If every single entrepreneur that crossed the wilderness had a team, why do you think it will be different for you?

Why do you want to put yourself in a situation where you are pulling and moving everything forward yourself?

Burnout is not fun and it takes a long time to recover.

Mastermind Group

In America they have horse pulling competitions.
The winner last year pulled 7,000 pounds.
The horse in second place pulled 6,000 pounds.
Lewis

How much do you think they managed to pull together? 13,000 pounds is the logical answer.
They pulled 30,000 together! Success in business came to me when I started collaborating with other people. In my 3 companies I have business partners and we all chip in where our talents are and we work as a team.

The past year in New York I was part of two excellent mastermind groups and much of the exciting things that happened in NYC was largely thanks to people I met in these two groups. Now that I´m back in London I have joined another mastermind group because I know my time spent with talented, enthusiastic and engaged people brings energy to my life and business. This email is about encouraging you to join or start your own mastermind group because I know how powerful this simple strategy will be for you and your business.

Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hills Mastermind Principle

Napoleon Hill was hired by my most favorite entrepreneur, Andrew Carnegie to go out and study the most successful and wealthy people in the world. Mr.Carnegie wanted everyone to understand how they also could create massive wealth in their life based on proven methods. One of the most important strategies is having your very own mastermind group.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Think and Grow Rich is a must read for all entrepreneurs. ONLY $0.99 on Amazon! There are lot´s of different versions of the book on Amazon because the book is a certain age;

1.”In general, works published after 1977 will not fall into the public domain until 70 years after the death of author, or, for corporate works, anonymous works, or works for hire, 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever expires first.”

That means you can republish the book under your very own Amazon account and make money on books that reach a certain age. It also makes the book very cheap because the supply is no longer regulated by the author or the publisher. This is awesome because we then get great books for $0.99!

How We Learn

I just landed in London and I love being back in this amazing city!
I was reading a really interesting book on the flight over called Strength Finder 2.0.
I love books!

I love educational videos!

BUT, according to the Cone Of Leaning your level of learning will be low because we are not physically engaged when interacting passively.
Reading and watching videos work more as a primer compared to the REAL life experience.
You can intellectualize skydiving, but you only know how it really feels like when you actually do it.
In 1969 Edgar Dale developed Cone of Learning that basically says that when you actually immerse yourself in an activity you get the full learning experience. Success will come to you much much faster if you take action and actually start a company. (See image below) That also why going to seminars where you activate all your senses and really immerse yourself in what you are building is so effective.

Content Writing

content
Remember me? It’s been a while since I’ve sent out one of my newsletters. A BIG thanks to everyone that has written me and asked;”Where is the newsletter Erlend?”. Thanks for the encouragement! I really appreciate those emails.
Did you know that I’ve sold 25,000 copies of my book and only received about 250 emails from readers? That means only about %0.01 of readers actually email the author of a book. My email is clearly stated in several parts of the book. Interesting right? Action takers get rewarded!

The title of this newsletter is called “Quality or Quantity” and rightly so. The last couple of weeks I have been going through my companies and focusing on increasing quality, not the quantity of activities. In my early years as an entrepreneur I was extremely focus on producing fast and being productive meant doing lots of things and being busy.
What works is producing VERY high quality content, products and services. One of the things we hear a lot about in information marketing is the need to post content regularly and share it on various websites/social media, but if the article sucks it doesn’t matter how much or where you share it! I´m moving towards high quality in all things and because I find that the most effective way to build my businesses going forwards.
The mindset shift occurred after my interview with Joe Pulizzi the founder of the Content Marketing Institute. He highlighted how important quality content is as well as the need to market your content in social media. It´s not enough to simply post it on your wall…

Michael Hyatt Shares How He Grew His Blog To Over 350,000 Readers Per Month
Michael Hyatt
Please stay in the race. It´s the turtle that wins the race not the hare. Often times I speak to coaching clients and they are wanting to replace their salary in 3-6 months in a new business. This happens extremely rarely and why do you want to put all that pressure on yourself and stress about it. Instead plan to build a business over the next 5 years and plan for that instead.
The media tells us we can do it in 6 months (that includes information marketing gurus), but the reality is that a business takes time to build momentum, but once the ball starts rolling it will compound and increase rapidly. This often happens after about 4-5 years. How did Michael get 350,000 readers a month? Because he worked on it for MANY years!

Self Rejuvination, Meditation

Today I have been an entrepreneur for 2938 days and it has been an exciting journey!
What I quickly discovered after starting out in 2007 was that I needed a very different kind of training and habits to become successful in business.

(For videos and jokes scroll all the way down) :)

Starting a business pushes you outside your comfort zone and creates stress. The stress is a layer that comes on top of the stress that most western employees experience and can seriously threaten your life. I typically say that entrepreneurship is an extreme sport that goes on 24 hours, 365 days a year and needs to be treated as such.
To manage my stress after my epic London tube panic attack a few years ago I have tried the following practices;

  • Pranayama
  • Yoga
  • Qi Gong
  • Frequent Exercise
  • Guided meditation
  • Reiki
    • Do they work?
Yes! They all work. Now the question becomes what works best?
80/20 rule remember? How can I do 20% and get 80% of the result?

Before you continue reading I want you to know that I do not get any monetary gain from writing about TM and that I´m simply doing so because I believe it can significantly improve your chances of success.

About 1 month ago I was walking down Wall Street (NYC) and decided to take an alternative route home from the office. On Beaver St. I spotted some posters of Opera Winfrey, Russel Simmons and Jerry Seinfeld and stopped to read what the posters had to say. Shortly after I was inside asking questions about what Transcendental Meditation (TM) is all about?

I have now been practicing TM for 16 days and the effect of the practice in my life is truly revolutionary. The great thing is that the foundation has centres where you can learn the practice all over the world + you get a lifetime membership with free access for the rest of your life!

To answer the question above; TM is proven to be more effective and give better results than any of the other practices I have tried and I truly feel the difference. The cool thing is that you can use TM in conjunction with the other practices and significantly improve your results. More info on proven scientific studies by clicking here

Mentorship

Welcome to the third piece of the puzzle for making success happen in your life and business.

Step one – Where is the Leverage in your business?
Step two – Believe that you can handle whatever comes = Confidence
Step three – Work with a Mentor

Highway Signpost "Mentorship" In 2012 I invested $30,000,- in mentors and training programs.
In 2013 revenue in my companies increased from $470,000,- to $833,000,- that´s an increase of 77.2%
In my business and life I have found that investing in mentors gives me the best return on investment;

There are three things you can invest in; real estate, the stock market and businesses;

  • Real Estate investments: Up 8%
  • Stocks and Bonds: Up 25%
  • Business Investments: Up 77.2% (Profit was at a record high also)

Investing in a mentor has been my best investment and I find that the more I invest in mentors the better my life gets.
“When the Greek adventurer Odysseus embarked for war with Troy, he entrusted his son, Telemachus to the care of a wise old friend named Mentor. Mentor raised and coached Telemachus in his father´s absence.
But, it was really the goddess Athena disguised as Mentor who counselled the young man through various important situations. Through Athena´s training and wisdom, Telemachus soon became a great hero. “Mentor” helped Telemachus shorten his ladder of success….

Mentorship is the secret of many of the highest-profile achievers throughout history. Socrates mentored young Plato, who in turn mentored Aristotle. Aristotle mentored a young man of the name Alexander, who went on to conquer the know world as Alexander the Great.

From The Karate Kid to Star Wars to The Matrix, adventure stories often adhere to a template in which a protagonist forsake humble beginnings and embark on a great quest. Before the quest heats up, however, he or she receives training from a master: Obi Wan Kenobi. Mr. Miyagi. Mickey Goldmill. Haymitch. Morpheus. Quickly, the hero is ready to face overwhelming challenges. Much more quickly than if he´d gone to light-saber school.”
Smartcuts: How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success by Shane Snow
So how do we go about choosing a mentor?

How do we find the person that will be willing to spend his time with you so you can get to the next level?

It´s starts with those exact questions! Who is living what I want in my life and how can I work with them to learn how to make it happen.

The mentor – protege relationship should be based on honesty, passion and vulnerability. The more dedication and passion you show for what you do the more your mentor will want you to succeed and move to the next level of entrepreneurship. The quest starts with asking yourself; “Who do I believe can help me get to the next level?”

Confidence

In the last email I wrote about the most important entrepreneurial skill; understanding LEVERAGE. That is a technical and strategic skill set that you can learn by reading books, talking to your mentors or simply modelling somebody else’s business.

But; “80% of success is psychology, 20% is strategy.” – Tony Robbins

This brings us to the second most important factor of entrepreneurial success; confidence.

I do not mean “cocky confidence”. The kind of confidence that we typically see in movies, media and that many people emulate in business. I was this type of hard nosed entrepreneur for my first 3-4 years and I was angry, stressed and frustrated. It also brought me to my knees because lack of success ate away my confidence day by day.
The type of confidence I´m talking about is 100% belief in oneself that you can handle whatever comes. That means when you fail or do something that other people may find stupid or funny it does not affect you because you know it is part of your path in life.

The truth of business and life is that we never really know what is going to happen. A part of us craves certainty. In fact that is why most people work in jobs and never do what they really want or believe they can achieve their dreams. The need for certainty is very strong for most people however if we reframe what certainty means we can build the kind of psychology that you need to weather the storms of entrepreneurship.

Confidence comes from the belief that you can handle whatever life throws at you. And you can if you believe you can.
The alternative is living in fear….

Guts “A coward dies a thousand times before his death, but the valiant taste of death but once.”
– William Shakespeare, Julius Cesar

If you feel you lack confidence or it could be stronger then there are processes you can go through to strengthen it. Using meditation apps on your smartphone is a way to build that muscle on a daily basis. Another is to simply face your fears and follow through on something that scares you.

How to Build Self-Confidence – Tony Robbins

Tony_Robbins

We all have felt 100% confident in our lives. Take a moment to think about a time you felt grounded in yourself and the energy in your body. Close your eyes and think about that moment. That is what Tony is talking about when it comes to putting yourself in “state”. Once you have felt that state once you can do it again and again.
To increase confidence in your life I suggest using guided meditations that focus on confidence every night before you go to bed for at least 21 days. That way your subconscious mind will start giving you the thoughts and signals you need to follow through in life and be more confident.

The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the key to High Performance and Personal Renewal by Jim Loehr, Tony Schwartz
This book is a classic. If you have heard of Brendon Bruchard he bases his thinking on this book.

The authors have trained some of the best athletes and high performers in the world to become great at what they do and it´s through a methodology of applied stress, then periods of rejuvenation and relaxation. Just like I talk about in my book `Never Work Again`. (see image below)

Managing your energy will be the key to your survival as an entrepreneur. There are 4 areas to manage when it comes to energy; mental, physical, spiritual and emotional. If you are not fuelling all these areas then it´s likely that you are not performing at the level you could be. When we feel like we could be doing better it eats away on our confidence. Great book! Check it out :)

Leverage Your Business

I have been on two awesome Workations;

  1. To Florida to join a crazy gang of internet marketers
  2. To speak at Oklahoma University to a group of entrepreneurs

What is a workation?
It´s when you combine work and a vacation of course :)
I do this all the time, in fact I spend about 6 months a year living the freedom lifestyle on a workation.
I´m back in NYC and as we say in Norway;”It´s great to go on trips, but best home.”
I just realized that does not translate at all!!! Probably Scandinavian humor…

Why do some entrepreneurs make a lot of money and have free time?
It´s called leverage.

forex-leverage

To really understand leverage I would like to mention a Japanese man who broke all records of the American Hot Dog Eating competition, by beating the existing world record of 25 hot dogs in 12 minutes to 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes.

Sounds weird already, right?

Hear the full story, you’ll love it.

Kobayashi came from the humble family of a Buddhist monk. Finding it hard to pay the rent, his wife sent him to a local eating competition to win $5000. Kobayashi had a regular build, and an average appetite.

His only advantage was that he had studied game theory and had a mind for finding optimal ways of doing things.Winning the local competition was easy. He paid the rent and still had some money leftover.

Kobayashi got addicted to the idea of winning such competitions. Then, he discovered that Americans were obsessed with these competitions and decided he needs to go to Cony Island to win the world’s biggest hot dog eating competition.

He was so determined, that he took couple of months off to diligently understand the “hot dog”, and how to eat it in an optimized way.

Fast forward to Cony Island, where he trumped the world record—not only that, he went on to break his record by winning the championship 6 times. He used the same method, to win it for eating noodles, eating hamburgers etc.

What did Kobi discover? What was it that could get him to not only do it once but 6 times across different competitions?

It turns out, that most competitors just gulped down hot dog after hot dog, using water to make it easier to swallow. Instead, Kobi chose to focus on understanding how it all worked and what was the most optimal way of doing it.

Here was his system.

Kobi would break the hot dog into two pieces, take out the sausage and eat it, dip the bread in water (which had some vegetable oil in it, helping it to slip down his throat) squeeze together the buns and swallow everything.

Now remember this is a tiny man compared to his competition. All he really had was a strategy and an eye for most efficient way to eat.

You might be wondering, what this has to do with your business or marketing.

It’s simple, Kobi’s system isn’t just used for winning food eating competitions.

It’s a system for winning at anything.

First, you understand the system. You need to break down each element of it, and master them to gain success.

Spend every morning for the next month thinking about where is the leverage in your business and you will make a lot more money faster.
